Wind on the higher ground of Arnold

Arnold sits on a rise to the north-east of Nottingham, and exposed roofs on higher ground catch the wind sooner than those tucked into the valley. Many homes there are postwar semis and bungalows with concrete tiles, built when ridge tiles and verges were bedded in sand and cement.

Wind tests every part of the roof in the same order: loose tiles first, then ridge and hip pieces, then verges. Even a modest gale can nudge a tile that was only barely holding on. Learning where your roof is exposed is a good start to deciding what to check.

Bungalow roofs, bedded ridges and what time does to them

Bungalows have large, low roofs that are easy to see from the garden, which makes problems easier to spot but also easier to ignore. Mortar under ridge tiles cracks and falls out, leaving the tiles sitting loose. Verge pointing crumbles, and the felt under the tiles, if it is old, can split and let in wind-driven rain.

The signs are simple: pieces of mortar in the gutter, a ridge line that no longer looks straight, or a draught in the loft. Catching these early often means rebedding or dry-fixing the ridge, not a larger repair. We look at the whole line before quoting.

Roofing services for Arnold properties

We serve Arnold with the whole range of work on this site, and each page explains it in more detail.

On a wind-exposed roof, the questions are about how the covering is fixed as well as how it looks.

  • Fixings. Older tiles may be held by a single nail, and extra clips can help.
  • Ridge system. Mortar can be rebedded or replaced with a dry-fix system.
  • Underlay. Torn or perished felt may need renewing in the damaged area.
  • Fascias and gutters. Damaged boards behind the gutter let water into the roof edge.

We describe the options and their different lifespans in the quote.

Ask whether the new ridge will be mortar or dry-fix, and what each means for future upkeep.

Working at height, access and building rules

A low bungalow roof is easier to reach than a tall house, but safe access still matters. A roof ladder, edge protection or a small tower may be needed, and that forms part of the job. Ask any roofer how they will work safely.

Like-for-like repairs rarely need planning permission, but replacing a large part of the covering can bring building regulations into play, including insulation and ventilation. Ask the council or building control if in doubt. If a neighbour's property touches the work, such as a shared verge on a semi, talk with them first.

How to request a roofing quote in Arnold

Call 0115 496 0089 or use the form. We serve Arnold but are not based there, so your request is how we confirm availability.

  1. Give the address and say what you have seen, such as loose tiles, mortar in the gutter or a drip.
  2. Mention when the last big storm was.
  3. Send photos from the ground or a window.
  4. We arrange a visit and check the roof and loft.
  5. A written quote follows, with the work and materials set out.

Take the time to read it before you decide.

If you also have a garage or outbuilding with a roof, mention it so one visit can cover everything.

Questions about Arnold

Why do ridge tiles come loose on older roofs?

The mortar bedding under them breaks down with age, frost and wind movement. Once it cracks, the tile can shift, and rain gets in. Rebedding the ridge or fitting a dry-fix system usually puts it right. We check the whole line for weak spots, because one loose piece rarely stands alone. Look for pieces of mortar in the gutter or on the path as an early sign.

Can I just refix a few loose tiles myself?

We would not advise climbing onto a roof without proper training and equipment. Falls from low roofs still cause serious injuries. Using the right clips and nails also matters for staying power. A roofer can reset tiles safely and spot the cause, which a quick fix on its own may not cover. Ridge and verge work may also need a second person to hold the ladder for safety.

Is a mortar ridge or a dry-fix ridge better for a bungalow?

Each has a place. Traditional mortar looks neat but can crack over time. Dry-fix systems use clips and fixings, need less maintenance and cope well with movement, though they look slightly different. We explain both and the way each suits your roof. Dry-fix systems also cope better with the movement caused by wind.

How do I know if my loft felt has failed?

Signs include daylight at the edges, damp patches on timbers, a musty smell and drips during wind-driven rain. Old felt can go brittle and tear. A look from inside the loft helps, and we check it on a visit. If it has failed in a small area, a local replacement may be enough. We can show you the felt from the loft side where it is safe to do so.

Should I fix a small leak now or wait until spring?

Waiting rarely helps. Water spreads damp through insulation and timbers, and winter frost makes small cracks larger. A temporary repair may hold until the weather improves, but you should plan the proper fix. We tell you honestly whether the leak can wait a short time or needs prompt attention. A temporary measure such as a tarpaulin is only a short-term answer.
