Step 1 of 3

What do you need?

What does storm damage to a roof look like?

High winds do not usually take a whole roof. They find weak points. Storm damage roof repair in Nottingham most often deals with tiles lifted or blown off, ridge and hip tiles that have come loose, slipped slates, damaged lead flashing and torn felt at verges. Flat roofs can lose edge trims or have their membrane lifted at the edges.

Look at your roof from the ground after bad weather. Tiles on the lawn or in the road, a dip in the ridge line, a gap where a tile used to be, or guttering hanging off are all clear signs. Inside, check the loft and top-floor ceilings for drips, stains and daylight.

Never go onto a damaged roof yourself. If it is unsafe or water is coming in, call a roofer, and for danger to people, call the emergency services.

What should I do straight after a storm?

Start with safety. Keep away from areas under loose tiles, fallen branches and damaged chimneys. If water is coming in, move belongings, put a bucket under the drip and, if it is safe, check the loft for where it is coming in.

  1. Take photos from the ground, and from windows if you can do so safely.
  2. Write down the date and time of the storm and what you noticed.
  3. Contact your home insurer early and ask what they need.
  4. Ask a roofer to look at the roof and give a written quote for the work.
  5. Keep any damaged pieces and all receipts.

A temporary repair, such as a tarpaulin or replaced tiles, may be sensible while a full repair waits for settled weather. Our roof repair page explains how a normal repair works.

Which Nottingham homes are most at risk in high winds?

Exposed sites and older roofs tend to suffer first. Houses on higher ground, such as parts of Mapperley and Arnold, and homes on open edges near fields or the Trent valley, take the weather more directly. Roofs with tired mortar, brittle underlay or rusted slate nails give way sooner than sound ones.

Chimney stacks on Victorian terraces can loosen pots and lead flashings. Ridge tiles on 1930s semis are a frequent weak point where mortar has aged. Large flat roofs on extensions and units can lift at the edges in strong gusts.

The weather in the East Midlands is not extreme, but autumn and winter gales do happen. Checking roofs before the stormy months is worth doing, and our roof inspection service is built for that.

We do not publish prices, because storm damage can be a single ridge tile or a large section of roof. The main factors are how much damage there is, how high the roof is, whether scaffolding or a platform is needed and what materials are required. Matching older slate or tile can take longer, as can lead work.

A written quote should list the work, the materials and anything that cannot be assessed until the roof is opened up. If you are claiming on insurance, the insurer may want to see the quote, photos and a short description of the damage, and they may use their own approved contractors or assessors. We can provide a written description of what we find, but we do not decide your claim.

How long does repair take and when should I call?

Small repairs can be done in a few hours. Larger jobs can take a few days, especially if scaffolding is needed or the weather stays rough. After a big storm many people need roofers at once, so waiting times can grow, and we will be honest about dates.

Call as soon as you see damage or a leak. Water coming through a damaged roof can spread into insulation and ceilings quickly, and each day it goes unaddressed can add cost. If your roof is worn out as well as damaged, we may recommend discussing a full roof replacement instead of repeated patching. Our home page shows the other services we offer.

Questions about roofing in Nottingham

Will my home insurance cover storm damage to my roof?

Many buildings policies cover storm damage, but terms, excesses and exclusions vary, and insurers often treat wear and tear differently from storm damage. Read your policy and speak to your insurer early. They will usually ask for photos, the date of the storm and a roofer's quote or report. We can describe what we find in writing, but your insurer makes the decision.

Can you put a temporary cover on a damaged roof?

Sometimes. A temporary measure, such as refitting tiles or securing a tarpaulin, can stop water coming in until a full repair is possible. Whether it is safe depends on wind, access and the roof itself. We will tell you when a temporary fix is sensible and when it is better to wait for a proper repair.

Is it safe to go up and look at the roof myself?

No. Wet, damaged roofs are dangerous, and falls from ladders and roofs cause serious injuries every year. Look from the ground with binoculars or take zoomed photos on your phone. Check the loft only if the access is safe. Leave work at height to a roofer who has the right equipment and training.

What is the difference between storm damage and wear and tear?

Storm damage is sudden harm caused by a specific weather event, such as tiles lifted by a gale. Wear and tear is slow ageing, such as crumbling mortar or perished underlay. A damaged roof is often a worn roof that finally gave way, which is why insurers look closely. Photos taken soon after the event and a roofer's written description both help.

Can flat roofs be damaged by wind?

Yes. Strong gusts can lift the edges of a flat roof membrane, loosen edge trims and flashing and pull at joints. Once the covering lifts, rain can get under it and spread across the deck. GRP and EPDM roofs on extensions and garages are repairable in many cases, but an older, worn covering may be better replaced.
